Show: Acoustic Eclectic Jam Friday 9pm-11pm EDT
Biography: The first Long Island, New York "Bluegrass Festival" ever held was
attended by Matt. It was one band, indoors, at a shopping mall. No
amplifiers, no microphones and only about ten people standing around
listening to the music. This was around 1971. Now, this Long Island
Bluegrass Festival amasses 10,000+ people every year, with many top-notch
National level Bluegrass artists. Whew! Bluegrass music has really
expanded since back then! Matt has a lot of fun playing
bluegrass/rock/blues/folk on his five-string banjo, with his band, The
Acoustic Eclectic Jam Band. Actually the band is really a
campground-level bunch of backyard-pickers, which has fun playing a few
local gigs, too. Matt is also an honorary, sittin' in-anytime member of
The Cash Only Band. They play (yep, you guessed it!) 100% Johnny Cash
tunes, all of the time!!! So, Matt gets to have fun picking some
rockabilly banjo with them. The Cash Only Band adores Matt for two
reasons: #1 - They like his banjo sound and, #2 - They appreciate that he
plays "from the heart." (Matt's interpretation of that is, "He'll play
for free!") It's all good though because Matt doesn't worry about making
money when playing. The "playing music with a real band" is the main
reward Matt wants and he thinks the fun offered by playing music with
others is great. Matt lives, with his family of three, in Sacramento,
California. Matt's wife, Nafees, operates her own business consulting
company. Zackary is their adolescent son. Matt attempts to earn his keep
as a full-time Mr. Mom, kind of Dad, and is also a High School Earth
Science Instructor at Rio Linda High School. He is a member of the
National Ski Patrol at Sugar Bowl, near Lake Tahoe, which is a mountain
search-and-rescue organization. On Matt's www.WorldWideBluegrass.com show
"The Acoustic Eclectic Jam", a diverse mix of traditional Bluegrass,
New-grass, Rock-grass, Jazz-grass and many other types of hyphenated grass
music, can be expected each week. Matt's goal is to play music from bands
which may be outside of the traditional Bluegrass pattern, something which
many may have not heard before, but originate from the grassroots,
regional band levels who want to share their sounds on the Internet. That
is also another source of Matt's fun! |
