Description: Jean was born in a little town in Aroostook County, Maine called Houlton,
ten miles from the Canadian border. Yes, she has Canadian relatives.
Jean's dad was a dairy farmer and there was plenty of Bluegrass and old
time country music around. This was especially so when Jean's mother
played the guitar for her and her brothers. Jean's mom taught them how to
play. Jean moved to Texas and worked and lived there for about 30 years.
She met a really nice man who had the same interest in Bluegrass music.
They started attending Bluegrass Festivals together. They would visit
Maine every year and go to the Bluegrass Festival, with her parents, held
in Cambridge, Maine. Her husband, "Bubba" could not believe the amount of
Bluegrass music there was in Maine. There were really more Bluegrass
Festivals and Bluegrass bands within driving distance in Maine than there
were in Texas. As Jean understood from a long-time resident of Cambridge,
it was known as the Bluegrass Capital of the World at one time. Jean's
husband plays the guitar and a little banjo and Jean plays guitar and
autoharp. She is currently learning to play the stand-up bass. She loves
going to jams with her husband and just being around folks who like the
same music that they do. After they retired, Jean and Bubba moved to
Maine. They attend the Bluegrass Festivals in the summer and go to as
many Bluegrass shows and jams in the area during the fall and winter
months. Jean says, "We have met so many nice people who we are proud to
call our Bluegrass Friends." Jean has been Secretary for the Bluegrass
Music Association of Maine since 2001. She and Bubba really enjoy
promoting Bluegrass music. Jean and Bubba have also put together a
Bluegrass Festival for a few years at the Detroit, Maine, Snowmobile Club.
Jean saw an ad in the newspaper one day that the Colby College radio
station was looking for DJ's and they were willing to train. Jean called
and met with the station manager and the rest is history. She and Bubba
became DJ's at WMHB 89.7FM, an alternative radio station which also
broadcasts on the web at www.wmhb.org. It is not a strictly Bluegrass
music station, but it allowed them to play three hours, and sometimes more
with fill-ins, of great Bluegrass music. Check out Jean and "Melody Lane
