Biography:
Jim Chatfield was born and raised in southwest Ohio. He grew up with bluegrass being played around the house but began playing drums at the age of eight. Ron Thomason of Dry Branch Fire Squad was Jim's Junior High English teacher. It wasn't a secret that Mr. Thomason was a bluegrass fan because he played it in the classroom quite a bit. Jim would continue play drums throughout high school. He played in Miller's Blackhawk Musical Corps which afforded him the opportunity to travel to Europe and Africa. During this time, Jim also enjoyed playing Rock music. He had picked up a bass guitar when he was about 14 because drummers were plentiful in the area and he wanted to play in a rock band. After graduating high school, Jim switched to playing in a country band. He played with Tumbleweed and Midnight Riders until about 1985. Jim quit playing music while raising his children, Amber and Aaron. He started going to Bluegrass jams in 2000 and hooked up with Mike Powell and Bob Stacey. They were playing with Younger Days which was a local Bluegrass band. Mike wanted to start a new band and asked Jim if he would come on board to play bass with them in a new bluegrass band. Shadez of Blue was born and they played together until 2006. Shadez of Blue was not only a local favorite but regional favorite as well. They played at many Bluegrass Festivals including OKI Bluegrass Festival, Roundeyes Bluegrass Festival, Bean Blossom among others. During 2005 & 2006 Jim was helping a couple of young girls, Kelly & Katelyn of McCoy Grass get started. They were playing supper breaks and such. Jim felt they had really good potential and wanted to help them in any way that he could. He agreed to help do some bass work in the studio for their first Bluegrass project "The Best is Yet to Come". In 2006 Shadez of Blue disbanded and Jim began working with McCoy Grass as their regular bass player. In the spring of 2008 he began to jam again with the four original members of Shadez of Blue and eventually quit working with McCoy Grass since Shadez of Blue decided to make another go at it. Jim's WWB program "Bluegrass in the BASSment" is broadcast on Thursdays from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM and Saturdays 11 PM to 1 AM Sunday morning.
