Show: Bluegrass Holler Tuesday 1pm-3pm EDT Thursday 2pm-4pm EDT
Description: Tonya Strong was raised in Eastern Kentucky in a small holler of Breathitt
County. She grew up singing Bluegrass gospel in churches with her friends
and family, all across Breathitt County. Tonya eventually married her
high school sweetheart who joined the USMC in 1995. They were married in
1998. With her husband being in the military, they moved quite often.
Tonya has lived in South Carolina, California, Virginia and finally
settled in Ohio, after her husband got out of the military. Even though
she may have moved across the U.S., Tonya has never forgotten her roots.
While living in all these different places, she was always able to find
Bluegrass Festivals and jams to sit and listen to. Eventually, listening
to Bluegrass music wasn't enough. Her love of Bluegrass music has
inspired her to want to learn how to play the mandolin. Tonya's now
learning the mandolin and tries to play and learn from anyone who will
teach her something new. Bluegrass music is a big part of her life and
she is passing this tradition on to her children. In 2008, Chelsie, age
11, and Elizabeth, age 8, started taking lessons on the guitar and bass
respectively. With her husband, James, playing fiddle, and as Tonya,
Chelsie, and Elizabeth improve with their instruments, no doubt you'll see
them at many of the local Bluegrass Festivals and jams in the area. Be
sure to catch Tonya's LIVE show "Bluegrass Holler" on Tuesdays from 1:00
PM to 3:00 PM. |
