Show: Bluegrass Breakdown Tuesday 3pm-6pm EST
Description: Tim Cahall (see he DOES have a last name!) has his birth roots in
Breathitt County, KY. He (like he says of Bluegrass Music.) was born in
Kentucky, but raised in Dayton, Ohio. Growing up, bluegrass was a
mainstay around his grandparent's house and they took him to many
festivals around the tri state region. He grew to appreciate many genres
of music, but bluegrass always seemed to pop up in his life!
Ron Thomason (The Dry Branch Fire Squad) was his Junior High and High
School English instructor (Illustrious, as Ron put's it) while playing at
the time with Dr. Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys. This proved
to become a major turning point in Tim's musical career. He says Ron
taught him more than English, paving the way for a bright career in Event
Production. He remembers Ron "playing" spelling tests. on his mandolin.
showing who was actually listening! Working the Winterhawk (now GreyFox)
BGF's with Ron taught Tim more of the business end and many more lessons
than Ron could have ever imagined instructing Tim. Tim still respects and
appreciates Ron Thomason as that mentor. Tim grew up in the same
neighborhood, fellow WWB I-DJ Gentleman Jim Chatfield did and they remain
close today.
After High School, Tim started creating shows and events with a local
radio station, WDJX in Beavercreek, Ohio, as well having his own small
company, doing dances and such. He served in the United States Air Force
having 2 of his eventual 5 children for 8 years. He created a
Bluegrass/Acoustic Jam @ the USO in Keflivik, Iceland, that still today
(from 1985.) plays Friday and Saturday nights! After the Air Force stint,
Tim remarried (LOL. Military Life can play tricks on ya!) and settled back
in the New Carlisle area. He and friend, Steve Allen, worked together on
the WYSO in Yellow Springs, OH Bluegrass Breakdown Show for many years.
He also re-created his company, Old National Bluegrass!, creating
concerts, events, an entertainment agency, and event consulting and
marketing. He became involved a very small local bluegrass organization
and did many local benefits, served on local community festival
committees, and started hitting his real passion (not moonshine!),
FESTIVALS!
He started volunteering with the Cornett Family @ the Festival of the
Bluegrass, as well as working many years with the Winterhawk organization.
It was when he became the General Manager of Poppy Mountain Bluegrass,
Inc., that he gained his nickname (that will probally never die away..) of
PoppyTim. He spent 8 years working and building that festival. He was
able to create things he has always been dedicated to, Youth in Music
programs and showcasing new talent! His company and those who attended
his Poppy Mountain shows have seen bands such as Mountain Heart, Nothin'
Fancy, Jimmy Bowen & Sante Fe, and many others up in his yellow ShowCase
Barn! He is very proud of the acts he has showcased before becoming major
acts! "PoppyTim" misses most of the things he left behind when he went to
work with the Bean Blossom Bluegrass, Inc. organization in 2003. He
helped that organization in many aspects of marketing, as well as general
festival organization. He especially is proud to have been part of the
"spirit" of Bill, having spent many years on Bill's, Hippie Hill!
Tim returned home to be nearer to his 5 kids and grandchildren! He teamed
up with long time friend, Ron Murphy (The Muddy River Band) to create the
Tri-Cities Concert and Jam Series in Wilmington, Ohio. After successful
seasons, Tim had to back up and re-group, due to some health issues.
During these times, Tim "tried" to lay low but still couldn't sit still
too long! He attended a small BGA jam session one evening to discover a
couple of young ladies "sangin" their hearts out! Kelly and Katelyn McCoy
(McCoy Grass to be.) blew him away! Talented and being young, Tim wanted
to help them in any way he could! He got them on stages to showcase their
talent with people like Honi Deaton and James King. He knew they could
make better use of their talents, singing and pickin' with people more of
their caliber! He urged them to form their OWN band and he's very proud
of their potential.
Tim has a degree in Business Management and is proud to become part of the
WorldWide Bluegrass.com family. He is looking forward to bringing "Bill's
Music" in all of it's branches to the WWB community! Check out his
Bluegrass Breakdown show! |
