Biography:
Born and raised in East Tennessee, the OTHER Tim (Doc) Carter has spent his life in an area immersed in some of the finest old-time, acoustic, and bluegrass music around. Doc grew up near the birthplace of country music, Bristol, TN. With a last name like Carter (no relation to THE Carter Family), you might expect that Doc started learning all about acoustic music early in life. While he was introduced to bluegrass music at an early age by a family member, he drifted away to other forms of music in his teens and early twenties. He remembers well the event that rekindled his interest in bluegrass. “I had taken my mother to an appointment and was outside in the car, waiting for her to come back. While tuning through the radio stations I happened to catch a radio show that Tim White used to do in the Tri-Cities area of Northeast Tennessee/Southwest Virginia. Tim Stafford, from Blue Highway, was there talking about the groups’ first CD. I couldn’t get enough of the music, and I still can’t.” Doc’s association with and love for bluegrass has motivated him to see countless shows and collect a large library of music. He loves the classic bluegrass sound best, but also enjoys other approaches to the music. He worked as an emcee and helped promote The Capitol Music Series at the Capitol Theatre in Greeneville, TN with his good friend Keeley Lowe. While working at the theatre, he met Mike Hedrick of 1300 WMTN Radio in Morristown, TN. The friendship resulted in both the nickname “Doc” and in training and experience as a bluegrass DJ. Doc currently lives in Limestone, TN, and enjoys live music in the Tri-Cities area as much as possible. Doc and his wife, Joan, have been married 23 years and have three children and one grandchild. He enjoys listening to and attempting to play bluegrass, old tractors, old cars, and riding his motorcycle. He spends a great deal of his time either running his small family business or working as an Assistant Professor for King College in Bristol, TN.
