Biography:
Kent is originally from Jackson County, Kentucky, in a rural area called Annville. He grew up listening to and performing various genres of music from Bluegrass and Country to Pop, Gospel to Classical and everything in between. On any day at Jackson County High School you might find him wearing an Olivia Newton-John t-shirt, and a Kiss necklace while he is sitting in the library at lunch time listening to McClain Family Band albums. Kent has many memories of going to what was then known as the Mac Wiseman Bluegrass Festival in Renfro Valley, KY, as well as kinfolks playing music at family gatherings. His Uncle Roy inspired him to later pick up the banjo and learn. His Aunt Pearl showed him how to play the only song she knew on the guitar which was “Wildwood Flower”. He attended Morehead State University where he performed in what was then the Black Gospel Ensemble, traveling to churches with the choir there. Later he attended Rosedale Bible Institute where the boys sat on one side of the chapel and the girls sat on the other side. He learned bass harmony there first by following the notes in the hymn and listening to the guys around him singing. From there he learned other harmonies by listening to the various parts of the acapella music at gatherings and at the dining room table where songs were sung before meals. From there Kent went into volunteer service to teach at Seminole Mennonite School in Seminole, TX. While in Texas he lived with a large Mennonite family and learned to play some accordion and played guitar with the family when they sat around at home playing in the evening. Kent now sings lead and harmony and writes many songs for his own family in their band called Hurley Ridge. Kent enjoys the old time music as well as progressive bluegrass and he is glad to be a part of Worldwide Bluegrass.
