Larry was born and raised on a small family farm in eastern Kentucky. He was introduced to bluegrass, country and gospel music by his grandfather. After graduating from high school Larry served in the U.S. Navy for four years. He attended Morehead State University where he received his bachelor's degree in Accounting. Ricky Skaggs recorded "Highway 40 Blues" which Larry penned. This song hit #1 in the nation in 1983 and helped launch Larry's songwriting career. Ricky encouraged Larry to move to Nashville in 1985. Larry is an accomplished songwriter and musician. To date one of his most famous songs according to critics and fans alike may be "Murder on Music Rose" which is a harsh commentary on country music's move away from traditional sounds. Alan Jackson and George Strait recorded the duet for Straits "Latest Greatest Straitest Hits" in 2000. Other artists who have recorded Cordle's songs include The Osborne Brothers, Diamond Rio, Ricky Skaggs, Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood, George Jones, Loretta Lynn, Alison Krauss, Kathy Mattea and John Anderson, among others. To date, Larry & Lonesome Standard Time have released "Lonesome Standard Time" in 2003 on Sugar Hill Records followed by Shell Point's releases "Murder on Music Row" (1999) and "Songs From The Workbench" (2002) with The Skynyrd Tribute album being released in 2004. Larry & LST's latest release is "Took Down and Put Up"(2007) on the Lonesome Day label. Cordle told CMT "I think we're a bluegrass band with a rock 'n' roll attitude,". "I don't mean that we have a big show, but we try to pay attention to things that I don't hear a lot of bluegrass bands doing. This is really our own sound." In 2003 Cordle and LST released Lonesome Skynyrd Time: A Bluegrass Tribute to Lynyrd Skynyrd. He received Song of the Year, from the International Bluegrass Music Association for his "Lonesome Standard Time." The song also drew a Grammy nomination.
